The Permanent Man Blog #14 - The Preview

Hey! Check it out! I've written 11 episodes now of The Permanent Man. I also will be submitting the first episode for preorder soon. Everything is coming together nicely.

Today, I'm going to talk about The Preview.

In television, especially dramas, previews happen often. This is the case a lot of times when the drama is serialized. The Preview usually comes directly at the end of the show, during or while the credits roll.

I'm going to implement this into each episode of The Permanent Man. The preview will be anywhere from two to four sentences long and give a taste of the story to come the following week. So, it will have something like this at the end:

"NEXT TIME ON THE PERMANENT MAN....
A cowboy takes Patrick to a local doctor to help treat the injury he has suffered. On their way, they hit a roadblock that not only prevents them from getting there but might cost their lives, too."

Directly under the preview it will mention the name of the next episode and that it is available for preorder, along with links to preorder the episode from various e-book outlets.

That's it for today. Stay tuned for the next blog update for The Permanent Man.

Designing a Book Cover - The Third Layer

In my last post, I spoke about "The Second Layer" of designing a book cover, which is making sure you title stands out well.  Now we head to "The Third Layer". This one probably will seem obvious and it complements "The Second Layer" . It is your author name. It's important that your author name be positioned and sized correctly. There are a few approaches to this. For well known authors—for instance Stephen King or James Patterson—having the author name prominent and big on the cover is good. The reason is, their names are so popular that the author name sells the book more so than the book title sells it. As a self-published author you could use this thought process for your cover to give the impression that you are a popular author. Of course, your mileage will vary with this approach. The other option is to not allow the author name to dominate the content. So you would want it to be smaller than the title. You could even make it barely noticeable

Last week, Amazon announced a new feature coming to Kindle Direct Publishing. It's called Kindle Vella . What's different about this compared to what they already offer? Instead of the more traditional book path, such as novels, Kindle Vella is designed to offer up a story in bite-size chunks of episodic content. This content will range from 600 - 5,000 words long or a few minutes to around 25 minutes to read, if you want to break it up to a timeframe. Some other unique features about Kindle Vella are: The first three episodes of any story are automatically free After episode three, readers pay for the episodes with pre-purchased tokens Episode cost is based on the length of the story and will not cost more than 50 tokens An optional "Author Notes" section is available for the author to speak directly to the reader Episodes a reader likes can be give a Thumbs Up Once a week, readers can mark an episode as a "Fave" .
