How to Categorize a Young Adult Novel on Kindle Direct Publishing

Do you have a great young adult novel that you've written and can't wait to send out to the world? Maybe it's dystopian, science fiction, or just good-ole literary fiction.

As you're setting up your book in Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), you're asked what category you want the book in. No matter where you scroll, you can't find a single category called "Young Adult". There's "Juvenile Fiction" but that just doesn't seem right to you.

So how do you categorize for Young Adult fiction?

The issue here is that the categories listed are BISAC categories. But Amazon will then take these categories and fine-tune it on the back end for their internal categories. They base these on several factors such as keywords, age group, etc.

Here are the two simple steps you need to follow when setting up your book on KDP to ensure they fall into Amazon's Young Adult category.

Step 1

First, make sure at least one of the two categories you choose is listed under the "Juvenile" category as shown in the image below.

Step 2

Next, specify the age group properly. For Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, set the minimum recommended age to 13 - 17. For Amazon.de, set the minimum recommended age to 12 - 15. The image below is based on a listed for Amazon.com. Note: If your book is considered a Children's Book, then set the minimum recommended age to 0 - 11 instead.

You could only select the minimum age, but if you choose a maximum that is 3-4 years higher, this helps make sure the most appropriate customers see your books. It's recommended for the Young Adult category that your range be 13 minimum and 17 maximum.

And that's it!

Now your book is categorized for Young Adult readers and will show to the proper audience who is more likely to buy your book.
